Recycling at Curbside

Recycling at Curbside
Now that it’s just the two of us, I take the garbage out every other week whether it needs it or not. 🙂 Thus, what you see here is the result of 2 weeks accumulation.

This photo should represent a good mix of landfill-destined garbage and recyclable garbage – the entire pile is AKA "solid waste." You can see that the volume of recycles exceeds the volume of disposable waste. Over 50% recyclables by volume, about 40% recyclables by weight.

Recycled paper in paper bags, no pizza cardboard (grease is BAD in recycled paper) and no wax coated papers. For City of Beloit curbside pickup, the recycle paper goes right to the Beloit Box Board pulp vat, never leaving the city. Unsorted, co-mingled plastic/metal/glass recycles go to a local recycling center. It used to be you had to watch your plastic types for recycling but nowadays just about any hard plastic is acceptable in the bin.

From what I’ve read, glass waste is the most problematic recyclable material. While plastic recycling technology is very advanced and thorough.

At least that’s how recycling was explained to me last year.

Dumpster divers, looking for aluminum in our recycling bin are going to be disappointed. There isn’t any. We don’t buy much of anything in aluminum cans.
